Weekend Writing Warriors 7/14/30 #8sunday

While looking through a folder of unfinished stories, I came across this one, “Love and War,” which has decided to go from a short story, to a novella, to a 7-part story. What the hell? Between edits of my upcoming book, The Lone Wolf, edits of existing stories, and finishing my next novel, I don’t have time for a novella series! But the characters are sticking with me, so who knows.

This story, “Love and War,” is a magic-free retelling of Beauty and the Beast, set in a vaguely medieval Celtic-ish world. Connor, the leader of a band of warriors, has been horribly disfigured by poison and needs to find the antidote before the poison kills him. His army stops outside Nyah’s village and demands to use it as a base of operations.

In this scene, Connor has just ridden into the small village and announced his intentions.

A shout from the crowd rang out. “And if we refuse?”

Connor’s smile no longer reached his eyes. “Perhaps then I should give you an incentive.” He scanned the crowd, then charged. Villagers scattered amidst screams. I grabbed tightly at the hand of Payton, my younger sister. Not tightly enough, however, as the soldier swooped in, hauled her across his saddle, and galloped away.
