Today’s eight are from a short story I’ve been working on, about a woman who’s ex-boyfriend suddenly shows up at her house after disappearing without a word three years ago. He’s been badly beaten and needs her help, but he won’t tell her what happened to him or why he left before.
Michael picks up the newspaper lying on the table, then sets it down, reaches for her hand, and asks, “Who’s Kevin?”
“Kevin’s my boyfriend.”
“You have a boyfriend?” he says, accusation in his voice.
“Of course I do!” Anna says as pulls her hands away from him, wrapping her arms around herself as she backs against the counter. “You left, without a word. You didn’t respond to calls, emails, texts–nothing. What was I supposed to do, wait until you came back? If you even came back at all?

He’s got a nerve holding those kinds of expectations. However, I’m guessing there’s a whole lot more going on than is revealed here :)

So like a guy, to be upset she has a boyfriend after he disappears for 3 years! I can’t wait to hear the explanation for his absence though – all very intriguing. Terrific excerpt!

After three years I don’t think he has a right to be upset about it. But I’m wondering what happened. Did he leave because he was in some kind of danger and didn’t want her to get hurt?

Yeah, I agree with Kate about after three years, BUT, the fact that he is upset really makes me wonder why he left. Must be a good story twist there. :-)
